The battle fought
here on August 10, 1861, was the first major Civil War engagement west of the
Mississippi River, involving about 5,400 Union troops and 12,000 Confederates.
Although a Confederate victory, the Southerners failed to capitalize on their
success. The battle led to greater federal military activity in Missouri, and
set the stage for the Battle of Pea Ridge in March, 1862.

Where is the nearest Airport?
The Springfield-Branson Regional Airport is Located on the North-East side of
Springfield.
From Highway 65, take the I-44 exit going west towards Joplin and Tulsa. Drive
for about 5 miles until you reach the West Bypass/Willard/Airport exit. Take
this exit and at the top of the ramp, turn left. Follow this highway as it loops
back over I-44. At the first stoplight (which is Kearney), turn right. The
airport is at the west end of Kearney - 5000 W. Kearney
From I-44, traveling either east or west, take the West Bypass/Willard/Airport
exit. Travel south on the West Bypass and turn west at the first stoplight which
will be Kearney. The airport is located at 5000. W. Kearney
